Charles Bukowski was a prolific underground writer who used his poetry and prose to depict the depravity of urban life and the downtrodden in American society. His works do not fit to the classical range of modern literature. He is like a glitch on TV screen, when the signal goes ripped and fancy picture of happy life distorts to the reality, full of double meaning happenings. Client wanted to depict in the book's layout poet's underground lifestyle, glitch writing manner, distorts of the reality that poet represented in his poems. It is the first bilingual (english and ukranian) Charles Bukowski's poetry book that was published in Ukraine.
We decided to bring the Charles Bukowski's poetry a new spin by creating an Art Book. Art Book of real life, brutal and soaked with irony of existence. Distorted layout, deformed and broken images are talking about non conformist lifestyle. Illustrations are not pure and soft — the life he is writing about is not a perfection at all. Characters are immoral and drunk, as well as the visual identity of the book. At the same time we wanted the book to be entertaining and involving. That is why the book itself is being distributed in paper bag, the one they used for drinking alcohol on the streets of Los Angeles.
Drawings and illustrations, held exclusively in black, white and red, transport the content in a creative and contemporary way, always playing with symbolism, heavy contrasts and with the typography. The topic of alcohol, which was indispensable for the author, is also depicted in an original manner. Featuring as a hip flask on the cover, the topic continues on the inside as a successively emptying wine bottle and numbering of increasing blood alcohol concentration.
