Deutsche Bahn HerthaHeroes App

The sponsor, German railway company Deutsche Bahn, didn’t just want to be represented at matches of Bundesliga side Hertha BSC anymore, they wanted to become a part of the game and bring the fans into play: With the second screen app HerthaHelden (HerthaHeroes) football fans are able to vote for their hero of the day live at the stadium for the first time ever. Additionally, they can see the lineups, live statistics, background information and gain access behind the scenes of a home match – through pictures uploaded by selected players and officials with the exclusive HeldenCam (HeroCam) app. In addition to voting for the Hero of the Day, Hertha BSC fans can also select their Dream Team, share it and compare it, for example with the Fan Line-up, which is calculated based on all the fan suggestions. The design challenge: How can the corporate identity of Deutsche Bahn and the colors of Hertha BSC come together to form a platform for heroes? By creating something of its own kind. The new look is based on the almost mystical atmosphere of a floodlit match in the rain and thus enters the pictorial world of dark cult comics. This look is also reflected in the presentation of players – true heroes who give everything they have, even when facing defeat. The Deutsche Bahn remains in the background, only a few red elements refer to the origin. In black, large-scale, with selectively implemented animations and clean lines the app concentrates on the essentials: the players and the usability.
