Emergence Magazine

About the Magazine
Emergence Magazine is a quarterly online publication with an annual printed edition. Each issue features a theme explored through innovative digital media as well as the written word. As we experience the desecration of our lands and waters, the extinguishing of species, and a loss of sacred connection to the earth, we look to emerging stories. In them we find the timeless connections between ecology, culture, and spirituality.
About the Story
‘Corn Tastes Better on the Honor System’ is one of the stories published on Emergence Magazine. In this multimedia essay, Robin Wall Kimmerer takes us on the nine-thousand-year journey of maize, reflecting on what has been severed in our once sacred and reciprocal relationship to this plant.
Concept & Design
To embrace the beauty of the maize seeds we choose to make a digital scans of them on 3000dpi. The result are highly detailed images in which you can almost feel the texture. For the formal infographics we choose to use use paper as the main material to emphasize the tension between the natural and the artificial. Is the corn produced in the modern way still natural? The choice for polygon models also amplifies this matter. For the rest of the design we choose to keep it as minimal as possible so the numbers/facts stand out clearly and communicate straight to the reader.
