Emergence Magazine

by Studio AIRPORT

About the Magazine
Emergence Magazine is a quarterly online publication with an annual printed edition. Each issue features a theme explored through innovative digital media as well as the written word. As we experience the desecration of our lands and waters, the extinguishing of species, and a loss of sacred connection to the earth, we look to emerging stories. In them we find the timeless connections between ecology, culture, and spirituality.
Concept & Design
The design challenge for the visual identity of Emergence Magazine was to make sure it didn’t limit itself to a static style whilst remaining recognizable for its audience. The most important elements of this digital identity are its typefaces. For the minimalistic logotype the ‘Windsor’ is used and for the editorial design the ‘GT-America’, ‘Ogg’ and ‘Reckless’ form a playful combination. With this we combine the old and the new to provide levity and warmth to the designs without needing to drive the entire aesthetic.
Whilst the identity is consistent in places like the overview pages and the main story templates it also gives space to more creative approaches. Within the magazine it’s important to experiment visually with different design solutions to give more strength to the variety of stories. After all; a virtual reality experience has other storytelling needs than a poem or essay. The solution to this is to always have space for new additional typefaces and use of colour. Also imagery and illustrations are approached differently throughout the magazine. To make sure everything feels as an “Emergence Magazine design” we use our keen eye for detail.
