The 300th birthday of Jean-Jacques Rousseau has been the subject of a number of TV and radio broadcasts by SRF in 2012, asking the question ”have science and art brought us progress?” in the Webdoc JJR2012. A profile of each participant is created by using text fragments of their answers to form a picture of each person.
How relevant is Jean-Jacques Rousseau today?
The on-line programmes of Swiss Radio and TV provide access to all the shows broadcast, regardless of time and place. And they expand the individual broadcasts and series with additional content and options, when users immerse themselves in various topics and worlds interactively.
The 300th birthday of Jean-Jacques Rousseau has been the subject of a number of TV and radio broadcasts by SRF in 2012, asking the question ”have science and art brought us progress?” in the Webdoc JJR2012. In 1750 JJR said answered no, won an academic prize and became famous as a cultural pessimist.
In JJR2012, fifteen questions drawn from Rousseau’s past treatise help to paint a picture of him.  Minds of today – from T.C. Boyle to Regula Stämpfli to Peter von Matt – spearheaded the debate; the public discussed it with them, commenting, sharing, and ”liking” the discussion on Facebook. A profile of each participant is created by using text fragments of their answers to form a picture of each person. Cleverly animated, generated on a random basis, and based on the uploaded photos in the profiles.
The 2012 edition of the Rousseau ”culture debates” has created a hit – and JJR2012 has revived an engagement with the ever present question of how to create the future.
