Memories can't wait - 40 jaar Effenaar
De Effenaar is a rock venue in Eindhoven with a rich history. Sex Pistols, Ramones, Joy Division, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Editors: many bands which later became famous or legendary once played in De Effenaar. The anniversary book ‘Memories Can’t Wait’ tells the story of 40 years of De Effenaar.
The coloured edge outer cover of the book is black as night, just like a rock concert which opens to a dark room. The glow-in-the-dark letters on the front are silkscreened, in the best tradition of the poster designers of De Effenaar. Inside the book, the party gets started, and we enter the wild and colourful world of rock music.
The title ‘Memories Can’t Wait’ is taken from a song by the Talking Heads, a band that once also played in De Effenaar. Together with rock journalist Niels Guns, Fabrique made a selection from thousands of photos, press cuttings, posters, flyers and tickets. In order to communicate the quantity of material, each page is made up of layers, like a stack of archive material. The chapters follow the various musical styles which have played a role at De Effenaar during the past 40 years. Each chapter has its own colour, following the entire colour spectrum.
The raw character of Eindhoven as an industrial city and De Effenaar itself is expressed in the book in various ways. Press cuttings, photos and tickets are printed as we found them, without correcting creases, tears or glue residue with Photoshop. The spine of the book is open, so that you can see the binding threads, which also refers to the former linen factory in which De Effenaar once began. The paper is raw and uncoated. Paper that sucks the black ink deep into its pores, and is allowed to get dirty. The tactile nature of the book means that you will want to hold it all the time.
Raw and pure. Dark but also multicoloured. Outside it’s an abstract block, but inside there’s a party going on. Memories Can’t Wait is a book that seamlessly matches the character of De Effenaar. A book that is just like a rock concert.
