Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, signage system
The building of National Symphonic Orchestra of the Polish Radio is a modern construction, relating in its form to Silesia region’s identity. Interior is both monumental and transparent.
Visual information system from the beginning was designed so while it answered user’s needs, would not dominate the space. It was integrated with the building.
Building’s facade is dominated by red brick, inside white stone and black concrete of the Concert Hall.
Colour red is reserved for information. Signs are painted directly on the walls. Systemic solution informs the user from the moment of ticket purchase and leads him to his seat. System of visual information also contains outside grounds signs and on the inside; music-lover’s area, interior signs for employees and musicians, as well as parking markings.
Information parameters are an outcome of building scale and specific limitations. During the concert, there are 2000 people appearing in the builing. Stairs/walkways lead to entrances – system is designed so no elements are covered by the crowd, and so the entrance code can be always seen within the space.
Analysis and simulations of possible coding of entrances, floors, sectors and seats forced ’a division’ of the building into two symetrical parts A and B at the same time splitting the crowd into two. Taking under consideration interior construction of the building and obstacles in the way of the audience, solution was customized to conditions. Audience is divided on the ground floor and moves vertically rather than horizontally, which resulted in most optimal time and quality solution. Thanks to this, audience’s way to the seat is shorter and no one gets lost.
