In January 2013, the 511 works selected to receive the ”red dot award: communication design” were displayed exclusively in Basel for three weeks in a large exhibition. Schaffner & Conzelmann devised a global campaign to publicise the exhibition and the respective opening event. The campaign’s imagery was based on the oil paintings of a young Chinese artist living in Switzerland. Portraits measuring 70 x 100 cm of each of the 16 ”red dot: grand prix” prize winners had been painted on canvas. After being combined with striking typography, the concept was adapted for each medium, i.e. print, web, and TV. The print material was printed on canvas-feel stock and, in part, finished with unusual punches and folds. Using oil paintings as the visual vehicle for a communication design exhibition had the desired secondary effect of not making the campaign compete, at a stylistic level, with the exhibited works. Submitted works: • Posters • Information pamphlet • Personalised invitation for the opening event and preview • Exhibition admission tickets • Information folder and business stationery • Website banner ad • TV commercial
