Ring frei  Kunststudentinnen und Kunststudenten stellen aus 2009
‘Ring frei’ is a catalogue presenting the works of 48 art students who participated in the competition ‘Kunststudentinnen und Kunststudenten stellen aus 2009’, arranged by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It accompanied an exhibition in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.
The fixed order of the conventionally bound codex always implies a certain hierarchy. Even the ‘neutral’ approach of introducing the participants in alphabetical order does not prevent the fact that always someone has to come first, and another one last.
‘Ring frei’ is the attempt to design a fairer, more democratic group catalogue. Each participant and his/her work is shown on a 6-page concertina fold, printed on Chromolux 700 paper. The matte side of the paper holds a portrait and some information on the artist, while the glossy side is utilized for reproductions of the works.
The 48 concertina folds are wire-o bound, hence enabling the reader to turn the spreads at will and bring a personal favorite to the front. When put back into the plastic slipcase, the chosen student’s name emerges in a window – on stage.
Everyone can be the cover star.
