The Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg, Germany) and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) wanted a playful way to make people enthusiastic for the exhibition “Mad about Surrealism”. We created a surreal game where people could step into the mind of the Surrealists!
Together with other players, you make a sentence based on chance and together create new, strange titles for the artworks. The Surrealists welcomed the role of chance in their work. They played a game called ‘cadavre exquis’ (exquisite corpse), in which each player wrote a line of text and then folded the paper over. The next player continued the text without seeing the previous contributions. The Surrealists used this technique to create surprising, fantastical, chance poems and drawings. With our game, people can’t just play with their friends at the museum, but online with strangers as well. Since the launch thousands of sentences have been made.
Be inspired by the Surrealists and create your own irrational artwork title!
