Project Description TENT Rotterdam
TENT is a platform for contemporary art that serves as a springboard for young and talented artists and curators. It serves as an ambassador of Rotterdam art and positions fine art from the city in a local, national and international context.
The design needed to express TENT’s claim to the cultural landscape; clarify what TENT stands for whilst addressing content and programming. The marker or ‘claim’ line resulted from this question. The line provides the core threading of the design, and formulates what TENT stands for. Furthermore, it underlines the position of TENT as a leading art institute.
For every activity and exhibition, an abstract inter-play of lines is distilled from the artists’ work that serves as a tag on the invitation, the facade of the building, window and the entrance wall. The invitation is additionally accompanied by an A6 sized booklet describing the exhibition’s contents.
The typography is based on the bold and outspoken image of TENT. It also matches its goals: to tag, mark and cast light on young artists, curators and fine art. The choice of paper and color always anticipates the campaign of the artist or exhibition concerned. The interaction between the design (claim-line, choice of color and paper) and the image of the artist refers to the constant dynamic between artists and the interests of the art institute.
