Innovation leads us to the future, and the future makes us innovate.
What are the methods for collaboratively prototyping as well as experiencing and impacting future scenarios? How to create hypothetical future props? How to imagine, prototype, deploy and evaluate visions of possible futures on an extended time scale.

The workshop will be a hands-on introduction to Bespoke’s Futures Design methodology. Futures Design is a four step approach to design scenarios by identifying external change signals, assessing future risk factors and strategic opportunities, and backtracking necessary steps to achieve preferable outcomes.

Participants will learn how to take action on an ever-changing society, and get familiar with tools and frameworks to monitor change signals as they arrive in the horizon and uncover opportunities at which today’s decisions and actions can be leveraged to move toward desirable futures.

The methodology will consist of the following activities:

Situate.Theme scoping: Uncovering the future of X by using a Scope Wheel
Search. Horizon scanning: Detecting external change signals by using Scan Cards
Sense. Analysing signals: Finding patterns and articulating insights by using Insight Template
Scale. Scenario making: Sketching scenarios by using a Scenario Canvas.

All activities will be facilitated by Andreas K. Mortensen & Chanel Haifley and co-created together with all participants.

The workshop will benefit all kinds of participants be it designers, academics, policy-makers or leaders but will emphasise the value it brings to professional/client work.

The European Design Festival restarts in Tallinn 2022

It might be that we have been forced for the last two years to stay on the virtual sphere, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t working on getting back on track. With this in mind Tallinn has been chosen as the city that will welcome the European Design Festival in June 2022.

The prestigious event, which gathers hundreds of communication designers from all over the European continent (and beyond) is set to resume after a two year break, made necessary due to the ongoing pandemic. It consists of exhibitions, talks, design walks, workshops, conferences, social events and of course the European Design Awards gala.

“We always go for cities that have a vibrant design scene but at the same time are the kind of destinations that people are excited to visit” says Mr Demetrios Fakinos, the European Design Festival director and added “Tallinn is such a place: an attractive, innovative city that is immersed in the great nordic design culture. I’m sure that with the help of our local partner, the Estonian Design Centre, we will oﬀer an inspiring event that will make everyone happy to attend”.

The Head of Estonian Design Centre Ms Tiia Vihand asserts: ‘‘We believe that European Design Awards Festival has a significant impact on local design community, as well as helps us to spread the word about the impact of design in our society generally. We feel very honored and excited that next year we can host the event in Tallinn.‘‘

The ED-Festival has since 2007 been hosted in cities like Stockholm, Zurich, Rotterdam, Helsinki, Istanbul, Vienna, Porto and Oslo, to name a few. Its mission is to celebrate European design, facilitate designers to meet, be inspired and build networks, but also to help promote the design discipline to wider audiences. “Being selected to host European Design Awards in 2022 is a great recognition to Estonia as an excellent location for international high-level conferences and events. We are extremely proud that Tallinn will be joining the outstanding lineup of EDAwards hosts cities and we are ready to impress the international design community!“ adds Kadri Karu, Managing Director of Estonian Convention Bureau.

It might be that again we are not allowed to have a real event, where we meet in person and we physically interact, but this doesn’t mean that we won’t make the best of whatever situation we’re in. Celebrating this year’s ED-Awards is our top priority. That’s why we are working hard to put an exciting show and of course we want you to be part of it.

On Saturday the 12th of June at 5 pm CET, the official results are going to be announced (exactly on the day when it was scheduled all along).

Petra Černe Oven

Dr. Petra Černe Oven is a designer, theoretician and author with a special interest in typography, information design and theory and history of visual communication design. She completed her PhD at the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK).

Černe Oven initiated or co-organised over 40 conferences, workshops and exhibitions and has published extensively in academic and professional media. Since 2010, she has been co-editing Zbirka 42, a series of books on design theory with dr. Barbara Predan.

Černe Oven has served as a member of numerous juries nationally and internationally (TDC NY, European Design Awards), acts as a country delegate at the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) and lectures internationally. Černe Oven is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (University of Ljubljana) where she serves as a head of Chair of Theoretical Studies.

Valencia to host the ED-Festival in 2021

Every year, for the past 14 editions of the European Design Awards we have been very eager to welcome the creative community to an exciting series of events that constitute the annual European Design Festival. It’s a time that we get to see many friends in person and get to know new ones. People whom we admire and people who inspire us.

This time however we are sad to confirm that there is not going to be an ED-Festival. The reason is of course very obvious and it has to do with the outbreak of COVID-19. Europe is having a hard time, and in particular Spain, our host for 2020 is paying a heavy toll. It is a decision that does not make us happy, but we strongly believe that it is of the utmost importance to put the health of our guests, staff and community above everything else.

At this point, we need to acknowledge the amazing work the people of ADCV (Art Directors’ Club of Valencia) have done to create content that would have been both fun and inspirational. This work, will not go wasted. It has been decided that Valencia will host next year’s event: the European Design Festival 2021. By then we hope that everything will look much, much brighter!

At this point, we want to stress that apart from the Award Ceremony and the European Design Festival everything else will follow the initial schedule. The juries have already started the task of evaluating all submissions and new virtual processes have been established in the cases where they are needed. You can rest assured that all work is being judged according to the high standards you have always associated with the European Design Awards.

According to our schedule, the notification of finalists will commence on April 6th and everyone will have been contacted by April 13th at the latest.
This means that we will soon be in touch again. Until then, we urge everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials.

Be vigilant, be optimistic, be creative and most of all, take care!

Postreet poster is an exhibition of posters collected, ripped off, cut out from the street, taken out from the poster mishmash. Expect great classics of “the Polish School of Posters”, remembering the times when posters were seducing passersby with colours and typography. Like a piece of jewelry lost somewhere in the city. We could not do without contemporary masters of comic sans posters whousing their a4 format try to break through marketing crammed pulp. There will be posters both representing the local and foreign scene. Highly engaged, handmade and serigraphy. Digital and offset, posters that entered the city walls and were noticed.

ED-Festival opening garden party and vernissage of the exhibition “123 Polish posters you don’t want to miss”

The Association of Polish Graphic Designers has a pleasure to invite you to the European Design Festival 2019 Opening. The event will take place in the building of the Poster Museum at Wilanów. Altogether, it will consist of a ceremonial inauguration of the festival, a vernissage of the exhibition “123 Polish posters you don’t want to miss” and afterparty in a beautiful garden belonging to the museum.

All these events will be a great opportunity to meet Polish and European designers, get to know each other and make new friends. The exhibition aims to present 123 posters that have significantly influenced the development of visual communication in Poland and the world. Each of the selected works has a curator commentary that allows you to understand the context of its creation. After the vernissage, there will be a guided tour with the curator.

Karol Śliwka: Polish Design Polish Designers

The largest monographic exhibition on Karol Śliwka, an outstanding graphic designer, creator of over 400 logos that have been a part of Polish everyday life for the past sixty years, shaping the iconosphere of the public space.

Karol Śliwka was a very multifaceted designer. His work has included packaging, book and record covers, stamps, and posters. Yet logos occupy a special place in his career, such as those created for the Institute of Mother and Child, General Director of Roads and Highways, the National Library, Adamed, and School and Educational Publishers. Some of these are presently considered cult classics – it would be hard to find someone in Poland who does not recognize the characteristic logo for PKO BP Bank.

Though many of Karol Śliwka’s designs are still part of the public sphere and the consciousness of many generations, as a designer he often remains anonymous. At this exhibition we are giving the floor to Karol Śliwka: quotes from conversations with the designer guide us through the various stages of his life and work. The witty and nostalgic stories he tells give us a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a graphic designer and the various phases of his work, beginning with the People’s Republic era, moving through the transformation period, and finishing at the present day. We break down Śliwka’s most familiar logos, analyzing their various elements and recalling the stories and anecdotes behind them. We consider what makes a logo good, and what features make it recognizable. We use real objects from the designer’s studio to show the traditional craft of the graphic designer: tools, materials, and techniques that today, in our epoch of omnipresent technology, are slowly being forgotten. We wonder what inspires this graphic designer, whose work helped shape the everyday life of several generations, and if his work should be perceived in terms of craft or art. Finally, analyzing the work of an experienced designer with “principles,” we ask about the values a graphic design can hold.

The main airport serving the city is Warsaw Frédéric Chopin Airport located just 10 kilometres from the city centre. With around 100 international and domestic flights a day and with 17.750.000 passengers served in 2018, Warsaw Frédéric Chopin Airport is by far the biggest airport in Poland and in Central-Eastern Europe.

Warsaw-Modlin Airport, located 35 kilometres to the north, opened in July 2012. With more than 3.000.000 passengers served in 2018, it is the fifth busiest airport in Poland, currently exclusively served by Ryanair.

This bus just follows the same route as Bus 175, but only during the night.

Bus 148 (Warsaw Airport – Ursynów-Praga)
Bus line 148 that provides access to Ursynów (a southern part of Warsaw) and Praga (an eastern part of Warsaw).

Frequency: 15-20 minutes.

Bus 331 (Warsaw Airport – Underground Metro Station Wilanowska)
Bus 331 connects with underground station Metro Wilanowska.
Opening hours: Daily, from 06:13 am to 17:54 pm.
Frequency: From 06:13 am to 08:56 am, every 10 minutes, and then from 01:54 pm every 15 minutes until 05:54 pm.

Bus N32 (Warsaw Airport – Central Railway Station)
Bus line N32 just follows the route straight to the Central Railway Station in Warsaw only at night.
Opening hours: Daily, from 23:15 pm to 04:49 am.
Frequency: 30 minutes.

In Warsaw airport, there’s a new terminal for buses and coaches. It’s located on the arrivals level, in front of the south pier.

Among 150 publications there are art books, photobooks, zines, albums and issues published by cultural institutions and art galleries. The exposition will familiarise you with the current trends in Polish publishing design, and you’ll be able to touch and read each of the exhibits.

Mr Bingo

Mr Bingo was a commercial illustrator for 15 years, working regularly for clients such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, TIME, CH4, The Mighty Boosh & The New York Times. An archive of the thousands of illustrations from this period doesn’t exist online because he got bored once in a motorhome and deleted his entire portfolio website. You can see a small selection of work from this period here.
In 2015 he launched a Kickstarter to fund a book about his Hate Mail project. The campaign featured a rap video and a diverse selection of rewards including being trolled, having your washing up done, going on a date in Wetherspoons, being told to fuck off on Christmas Day and getting shitfaced on a train.

Peter Biľak

Born in Czechoslovakia, Peter Bil’ak lives in the Netherlands. He worked at Studio Dumbar, before starting a design studio in The Hague, where he excels in the field of editorial, graphic and type design, combined with part-time teaching at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague. In 1999 he started Typotheque type foundry, in 2000 founded, edited and designed art & design journal DOT DOT DOT and in 2009 co-founded Indian Type Foundry.

Michael Bierut

Michael Bierut studied graphic design at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, graduating summa cum laude in 1980. He worked for ten years at Vignelli Associates before joining Pentagram as a partner in 1990. He is a senior critic in graphic design at the Yale School of Art and a lecturer in the practice of design and management at the Yale School of Management.
