European Design Festival, June in Oslo

As one of Europe’s fastest growing cities this decade, Oslo is buzzing with energy from new neighbourhoods and cutting-edge food, to design, fashion and art scenes. Captivating landmarks like the Opera House, the Astrup Fearnley Museum and Barcode are changing the face of the city, and Oslo maintains its refreshing closeness to nature that few other capitals can match.

Nestled between the Oslofjord and forested hills, Oslo was named European Green Capital 2019 for its dedication to conserving natural areas and reducing pollution. The compact city centre is easy and safe to explore on foot or by bike, and the efficient public transport system makes the entire city accessible without a car.

Oslo’s restaurant scene is diverse and constantly evolving with new, innovative kitchens – many of them with a fresh approach to Norwegian ingredients and food traditions. This attitude has led to international praise and is also central to the city’s celebrated cocktail and coffee cultures.

Norway’s capital since 1814, Oslo is home to many of the country’s most prestigious cultural institutions. First-rate opera, ballet and theatre performances are presented throughout the year, and art lovers can see famous works at The National Museum and The Munch Museum and browse through the city’s numerous galleries. Oslo’s vibrant and cutting-edge creative scene has manifested itself, among other things, in numerous distinctions in the European Design Awards.

This year, our Awards ceremony is going to take place on the 2nd of June 2018 in Oslo. It will be preceded by a series of very interesting events, curated by Grafill, the interest organisation for those studying or working within the field of visual communication in Norway. More details on the subject will be announced shortly.

Find out more about this year’s ED-Festival on Grafill’s official website.

Ten years of European Design Awards

The European Design Awards were launched exactly ten years ago in Athens Greece.
During this time eight different studios have managed to fulfill the very strict criteria needed in order to be awarded the title “European Design Agency of the year”.
These are: Beetroot Design Group (2008), Lava (2010), Les Graphiquants (2011), Silo (2012), Jäger & Jäger (2013), R2 (2014), Ermolaev Bureau (2015) and Raffinerie (2016). In total it’s two studios from the Netherlands, and one from France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Russia and Switzerland.

For the first time in the history of the ED-Awards, we gather all these top performers in order to exhibit some of their finest work at the same place.
The result is, of course, an exciting exhibition with some of the best communication design output on a global scale.

Awards Ceremony 2017

This year’s award winners will be revealed in a ceremony hosted by stand-up comedian Alistair Barrie taking place in Porto’s Rivoli Theatre.
All winners will then walk to the nearby dos Aliados for their gala dinner. The night will wrap up with the annual Winners’ Party.

The Portuguese Scene

Helena Sofia Silva and Eduardo Filipe Aires lead a conversation with three young and upcoming studios from Portugal. They each introduce themselves and discuss with each other and the audience the realities of the local design scene.

The Royal has a deep conceptual and strategical approach to the design wonders. It also has a romance with graphic contexts and form. The Royal is methodologically denying the mark of its authorship, but it consistently tends to fail in doing so. The Royal cares for the socially contextual problems and strives to develop their solutions in order to pursue richer answers. It longs for poetry and its hands are vibrantly humanistic. Mental. Loyal to culture, it researches, it lectures and it designs. Established since 2010, it adds clients across cultures: from Australia to Kuwait, from London to New York, jumping to California and back to Porto. Is continuously developing cross-media solutions, promoting dialogues between the client-context-public realms and it still happily jumps on self-promoted projects as a way to justify the caffeine intake.

A Tumblr Manifesto: the Critical Intentions of the Interface Deco – workshop with Post Eady

This workshop originates from a perceived dearth of coherent direction within contemporary Graphic Design as a discipline. Where movements such as Futurism, Modernism, Postmodernism once defined the arts we now have no readily discernible ideologies within design to follow. We participate in the maelstrom of the internet and its myriad communities, where ideas can change from moment to moment and groups form and disperse within a matter of days. Neoliberalised and networked capitalism has atomised the practitioners of the discipline further and further, and as such, the debate surrounding ‘the state’ of graphic design has been rendered ever more in flux. Manifestos and writing concerning the condition and purpose of graphic design are rare and perhaps increasingly futile; outdated before they are even published. With this in mind, what does it now mean to be a critical practitioner? Critical of what? Without defining the terrain upon which you stand adopting a solid stance becomes increasingly difficult and traditional fixed positions of design are exposed as more and more lacking.

Despite this perceived ‘lack’, graphic design continues to somehow progress. Vitrines of design can be found everywhere online, showcasing images of work removed from their original context. Endless streams of flattened content lost in an ever-shifting mass. Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook. All of these play out similar roles and it is on these platforms that visual trends are primarily developed, disseminated and dispersed. Are these the new movements? Small, but many, agile in their fragility.

This workshop mines Tumblr as one such repository and dissects its contents. We aim to take on the absurd task of reading into and over-intellectualising graphic design trends in the hopes of mapping a territory. Discussion will drive this section as we pluralise popular graphic forms. Following this, we will attempt an inversion of this process by mapping both current and ‘dead’ or inert trends to contemporary contexts in a bid to examine if trends can be used as a plural set of heuristic responses. We will eschew ‘originality’, whatever that may now mean, and replace it with ideas of networked commonalities.

Post Eady is a collective formed after graduating from the Royal College of Art as a follow up to the graphic design forum named ‘Eady Forum’.
It is intended as a space for workshop creation and critical discussion around graphic design.
The current members are Joana Pestana, Max Ryan & Vilja Achté.

Design for Porto

The city of Porto is considered by many as Portugal’s design capital.
Among others, it is the home of a studio that has won the title of “European Design Agency of the year” and another that has won an “ED-Awards Best of Show”.
To a certain extend, the City (municipality) of Porto is a major contributor.
By assigning work, relative to the identity of its various services and institutions, to a number of locally based studios, it has without a doubt helped a lot towards this end.
The specific exhibition is going to showcase some of this work.

Flying to Porto
